Meeting with UN Special Rapporteur Richard Bennett

It was a significant opportunity to meet with Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, and discuss the pressing challenges facing Afghan women and girls under the current circumstances.During our meeting, I highlighted the ongoing restrictions imposed on women and girls, including limitations on access to education, employment, public participation, and freedom of movement. I emphasized the profound impact these policies have on the lives, dignity, and future prospects of Afghan women and their broader consequences for Afghan society.We also discussed the situation of women human rights defenders, journalists, activists, former public servants, and other individuals who remain at risk because of their work, beliefs, or advocacy. Particular attention was given to the challenges faced by women who have been forced into displacement or exile as a result of insecurity, persecution, and shrinking civic space.A key part of our conversation focused on the situation of Afghan refugees, especially women and girls living in neighboring countries and other host states. I stressed the need for stronger international support, improved protection mechanisms, and more efficient and transparent pathways for resettlement and humanitarian assistance. Many vulnerable individuals continue to face uncertainty while awaiting durable solutions and access to basic rights and services.We further exchanged views on the importance of continued international monitoring and documentation of human rights developments in Afghanistan. I underscored the need for accountability, sustained diplomatic engagement, and meaningful efforts to ensure that the concerns and experiences of Afghan women remain central to international discussions on Afghanistan.The meeting also provided an opportunity to share the voices and concerns of Afghan women both inside the country and in exile. I emphasized that Afghan women continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience and determination despite the challenges they face and that their participation in shaping the future of Afghanistan is essential.This engagement reaffirmed the importance of maintaining international attention on the human rights situation in Afghanistan and strengthening collective efforts to support the rights, dignity, and aspirations of Afghan women and girls.
