Statement of the Movement of Afghanistan Women in Exile on the Taliban's Decision to Remove Women's Photographs from National Identity Cards

The Movement of Afghanistan Women in Exile has issued a statement strongly condemning the Taliban's recent decision to remove women's photographs from Afghanistan's national identity cards, describing it as a clear violation of fundamental human rights and part of what the Movement characterizes as the Taliban's broader policy of gender apartheid. The statement notes that, under Article 46 of the Constitution of Afghanistan, the national identity card (Tazkira) serves as the official proof of identity for every citizen and is not determined by gender. It further refers to Article 22 of the Constitution, which prohibits discrimination between women and men. According to the Movement, removing women's photographs from identity documents amounts to the denial of the identity of half of Afghanistan's population.
