Movement of Afghanistan Women in Exile Commemorates Hazara Culture Day

The Movement of Afghanistan Women in Exile, under the leadership of Ms. Farzana Rezaei, commemorated Hazara Culture Day (19 May) through a special event dedicated to celebrating the rich cultural heritage, history, and identity of the Hazara people.According to the organizers, Hazara Culture Day is observed annually by Hazara communities and cultural organizations in various parts of the world. Over the years, it has become an important occasion to recognize the contributions of the Hazara community to Afghanistan's cultural diversity while promoting the preservation of its language, traditions, arts, literature, and historical legacy.The event brought together members of the Afghan diaspora, women activists, and representatives of civil society, who emphasized the importance of safeguarding Afghanistan's multicultural heritage. Participants noted that the country's cultural richness is rooted in the diversity of its ethnic, linguistic, and religious communities, and that the preservation of this diversity is essential to fostering mutual respect, social cohesion, and an inclusive future for Afghanistan. During the program, participants expressed concern that, since the return of the Taliban to power, opportunities for the Hazara community and other groups to freely organize and participate in cultural events have become increasingly limited. They observed that many cultural gatherings and commemorative activities that were once held openly are now significantly restricted or conducted privately due to concerns related to security, civic space, and freedom of cultural expression.Speakers further highlighted that restrictions on cultural and social activities have affected not only the Hazara community but also Afghanistan's broader cultural landscape. They stressed that the protection of cultural heritage is closely linked to the protection of human rights, freedom of expression, and the preservation of the country's diverse historical identity. The Movement of Afghanistan Women in Exile reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote cultural diversity, peaceful coexistence, and equal respect for the identities of all communities in Afghanistan. The Movement emphasized that every individual and every community should have the opportunity to celebrate and preserve their language, traditions, history, and cultural heritage without discrimination or restriction.Hazara Culture Day has, in recent years, been commemorated by Hazara diaspora communities in several countries, including Pakistan, Australia, Canada, the United States, and across Europe. These events have provided valuable opportunities to strengthen community ties, preserve cultural heritage for future generations, and promote greater awareness of the history, resilience, and cultural contributions of the Hazara people.The Movement of Afghanistan Women in Exile believes that cultural diversity is one of Afghanistan's greatest national assets.
