Statement of the Movement of Afghanistan Women in Exile On the Occasion of the Beginning of the New Academic Year and the Continued Denial of Education for Afghan Girls

As the new academic year begins, classrooms around the world reopen, welcoming students with the promise of learning, opportunity, and hope. In Afghanistan, however, millions of girls continue to be denied this fundamental opportunity. For yet another year, secondary schools and universities remain closed to many Afghan girls and young women, depriving them of their internationally recognized right to education.The Movement of Afghanistan Women in Exile expresses its deep concern over the continued restrictions on girls' access to education. The prolonged exclusion of girls and women from educational institutions has profound implications not only for their individual development and well-being but also for the future social, economic, and cultural development of Afghanistan.Education is a universal human right and a cornerstone of sustainable development, social inclusion, and lasting peace. Ensuring equal access to quality education for all, without discrimination, is a commitment reflected in international human rights instruments and is essential to building resilient and prosperous societies.The continued interruption of education for Afghan girls has deprived an entire generation of opportunities to acquire knowledge, develop their potential, and contribute meaningfully to the future of their communities and country. Every academic year that passes without equal access to education represents an immeasurable loss for Afghanistan and its people.On this occasion, we express our solidarity with Afghan girls, educators, parents, and all those who continue to advocate peacefully for the right to education. Their perseverance and commitment to learning reflect the resilience and determination of Afghan society.The Movement of Afghanistan Women in Exile respectfully calls upon the United Nations, UNESCO, UNICEF, international human rights mechanisms, donor governments, and the broader international community to:Continue advocating for the restoration of equal access to education for all Afghan girls and women at every level of learning.Strengthen international initiatives that support educational opportunities for Afghan girls, both within Afghanistan and in countries hosting Afghan refugees.Ensure that the right to education remains a central priority in international engagement and dialogue concerning Afghanistan.Support sustainable educational programs that preserve learning opportunities and empower Afghan girls to realize their full potential.We firmly believe that the future of Afghanistan depends upon the education, talents, and meaningful participation of all its citizens. Lasting peace, sustainable development, and social progress cannot be achieved while half of the population is prevented from exercising one of its most fundamental rights.As the new academic year begins, we reaffirm our commitment to the universal principles of equality, human dignity, and the right to education. We remain hopeful that the day will come when every Afghan girl can once again enter her classroom freely, pursue her aspirations without discrimination, and contribute fully to the future of her country.Education is a fundamental human right.
